A tense thriller focusing on Jai (Arshad Warsi) and Suhel (John Abraham), two Indian television reporters arriving in Afghanistan, a country devastated by the American bombings. Helped by their Afghan guide, they search for the ultimate news scoop with a Taliban soldier.
But their plans go haywire when they are kidnapped at gunpoint by Imran (Salman Rashid), a Taliban fugitive wanting to escape to the Pakistan border culminating into a shocking, unpredictable but yet moving climax.
Dealing with a grim and gritty subject, the director succeeds in holding your attention throughout by portraying the relationship between all four characters with great sensitivity, as hostility slowly gives way to trust.
Salman Rashid, as the kidnapper, provides the nail-biting moments with his nice guy/bad guy image whilst Arshad Warsi mellows the tense situations with the much needed humour.
John Abraham as Suhel is relegated to the sidelines. His character together with the American journalist, Jessica, could have been better developed to make both of them more relevant to the plot.
On the technical front, cinematographer, Anshuman Mahaley, gives a raw and rugged feel to the movie with his excellent camera work.
Kabul Express is definitely worth a watch if you have already seen Dharmatma and Khuda Gawah, which were filmed in Afghanistan.
This film concentrates more on the post-Taliban era not witnessed before in Hindi cinema.
