Mahmoud Tarzi Media Awards


The Afghan Council UK (Initiated) in Cooperation with the National Council and the Ministry of Culture and Information of Afghanistan has granted the Mahmoud Tarzi Award. Mahmoud Tarzi is the Father of modern Afghan journalism. The ceremony took place at the conference hall of the Afghan Parliament. For the first time this award was made by former Afghan journalist and Director of the Afghan Council UK, Mayvand, to twenty journalists from the well-known media sources listed below.

These awards were granted to journalists from; 8 in the Morning daily paper, BBC World Service radio /Afghanistan , Tolo TV, Ariana TV, Anees Daily Paper, Ashna Radio Television of Voice of America, RTA (National Radio and Television), Shamshaad TV, Afghan TV, Aina TV, Noor TV, Watandaran Press Balouchi Services, Watandaran Press Pashai Services, Bakhtar News Agency, Pajhwok Agency, Hindukush Information Agency, Hewad Daily Paper, Kabul Times Daily Paper, the European Network of free journalists and the Kabul weekly paper.

Faqir Mayvand, the Director of Afghan Council UK, said during this ceremony of awards presentation that these awards have for the first time been granted to praise the journalists who publicise interesting news and reports from every corner of Afghanistan at the national and international level. He added that the Afghan Council UK would grant these awards in some of the other provinces in future.

At the end of his speech Mr.Mayvand said that one of the vulnerabilities and the restraints of the Afghan media are not having a media system within a specific lawful structure. It is the duty of the Ministry of Information and Culture of Afghanistan to introduce such a system with the support of the media. It is important to note that intellectual discourse and the media generally, are not highly regarded within Afghanistan.

Meanwhile Saleh Mohammed Sljouqi the Deputy Secretary of the House of People said during the ceremony that the increase in media sources and information is one of the proud historic achievements in Afghanistan.

Deen Mohammad Mobarez Rashedy, Deputy Minister of Publication of Ministry of Information and Culture said that the growth of the media during last few years has reduced, but there is a need to work towards improving the quality of the media output.

Mr Rashedy called the last nine years achievements of the media in Afghanistan as golden achievements, and said “Afghanistan today has a large number of media outlets and the circulation figures are good. As far as the Ministry of Culture and Information and Media are concerned beside the increase in the figures the quality should also be improved”. He also said that one of the opportunities for the growth of quality in the media is encouraging journalists. He said that the Ministry of Information and Culture has plans to give awards to the best journalists.
